Smithsonian Books holds many subsidiary rights to most of its backlist titles. Please read the following information carefully so that we can handle your request for permission expeditiously.
Before contacting us for permission, please closely check the material you wish to reprint to be sure that we are, in fact, the rights holder. Clues can be found in footnotes, endnotes, acknowledgments, captions, photograph credits, lists of figures and tables, and on the copyright page. If the material is credited to another source, you must send your request to that original source.
We cannot grant permissions for the use of the following material:
1. Photographs and illustrations used in Smithsonian Books publications. Permission must be obtained from the original source as credited in the caption or elsewhere in the book. For Smithsonian images, please contact Smithsonian Photographic Services at (202) 633-1933 or .
2. Material published by any other entity of the Smithsonian Institution. Please call (202) 633-1000 to obtain the phone number for the Publications Department in that division.
3. Bureau of American Ethnology or Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections publications, which are federally funded and therefore are in the public domain unless the material is credited to another source. If you quote from material in the public domain that we have published, please acknowledge the source.
